    Holderness in the East Riding of Yorkshire is one of Europe’s fastest-eroding coasts, often taught at about 1–2 metres a year on average and faster on some till cliffs. This is a named UK case, not a generic “soft rock” paragraph.

    The cliffs are mostly glacial till (boulder clay): unconsolidated, easily saturated, and ready for slumping as well as wave attack. Flamborough’s chalk headland to the north is the harder contrast that helps you explain discordant resistance.

    Destructive waves in the North Sea, a long fetch, and winter storms provide the energy. Hydraulic action and abrasion undercut; weathering and mass movement finish the cliff. Attrition rounds the pebbles that then become the sandpaper.

Why till loses to the North Sea

Chalk at Flamborough holds a headland; the till to the south is a different material. Boulder clay is a jumble of pebbles in a clay matrix, dumped by ice, not cemented like carboniferous limestone. Rain saturates it; the cliff slumps; waves remove the debris so the next slump can happen. That combination of weathering, mass movement and marine erosion is why “soft rock” is too short an answer. Add fetch, destructive waves, and the lack of a wide protective beach on undefended stretches. When you describe Holderness, start with geology, then energy, then a rate, then a named settlement. Four clauses, one place — that is a 4-mark physical explanation rather than a moan about the sea.

Mappleton’s groynes and the neighbour tax

Longshore drift here generally carries sediment south. A groyne is a fence across that conveyor. Mappleton’s 1991 scheme piled rock groynes and armour to widen the beach so waves break early and spare the village and the road. It worked in front of Mappleton. South of the last groyne the beach starved, wave energy hit the till harder, and land was lost faster. This is not a trick question; it is sediment-cell geography. Sustainable management has to think beyond the parish that paid. In 6- and 9-mark “evaluate groynes”, give the local win, the down-drift loss, the cost, and the fact that doing nothing also has losers (Mappleton itself). Holderness is the UK story that stops “just build groynes” from sounding like a plan.

Spurn Head needs the dying cliffs

A spit grows where LSD carries sand and shingle past a sudden bend into open water. At the Humber the coast turns; sediment continues; Spurn’s narrow ridge and hook form; salt marsh can sit in the calm behind. The cruel link is that the spit is fed by the erosion everyone is trying to stop. Protect the whole Holderness cliff line perfectly and you starve Spurn and change the estuary. That is why SMP choices (hold the line here, no active intervention there) are cell-scale politics. Storms breach the neck; the spit is not a permanent wall. Use Spurn to show deposition landforms and to show that coastal management is a budget for sediment, not only for concrete. Name the Humber. Unnamed “a spit in Yorkshire” is sloppy.
