Why a 7.0 killed more than an 8.8

Chile’s Maule earthquake released far more energy, yet Haiti’s death toll was orders of magnitude higher. Chile sits on a famous destructive margin; schools drill; engineers design for shaking; the state can still function after the event. Port-au-Prince had dense, unreinforced housing, little insurance, a shallow quake almost under the city, and ministries that collapsed with the housing. Secondary cholera then added a public-health disaster on top of the rubble. The geographical sentence is brutal and examinable: hazard plus vulnerability plus capacity. If you only quote magnitudes, you are doing geology, not GCSE Geography. Always finish a Haiti paragraph with Chile or Japan so the examiner can see the contrast you were taught to make.

Aid that could not land

Immediate response needed intact runways, ports, roads and a government that could say who was in charge. Haiti lost all four. Aircraft circled; medicines sat in piles; water and sanitation in camps failed. That is why “send aid” is a Level 2 sentence. A Level 3 sentence names the bottleneck: damaged airport, few heavy-lift vehicles, unclear coordination, and a population already poor before 12 January. International NGOs and the UN did arrive — and later the cholera outbreak showed that aid itself can become a secondary hazard if water is mishandled. For “evaluate responses”, split short-term (search and rescue, tents, water) from long-term (housing, jobs, land rights) and admit that years later Port-au-Prince was still not “recovered”. Recovery is a development problem wearing a hazard badge.

Primary shaking, secondary cholera

Examiners love the primary/secondary split because it stops a death-toll dump. Primary: collapse, crush injuries, destroyed palace, broken port. Secondary: fires, aftershocks, homelessness, looting fears, and cholera from dirty water. Cholera is the detail that lifts a Haiti answer above “people died”. It also lets you talk about LIC health systems: few hospitals left standing, crowded camps, and weak surveillance. Do not write that the earthquake “caused a virus”; write that damaged water and sanitation allowed a water-borne disease to spread. That causal chain is geography. If the question is only primary effects, leave cholera out. If it is effects in general, cholera is your best secondary example because it is dated, named, and deadly.
