Plate margins and hotspots

Earth’s lithosphere is broken into plates that move on the asthenosphere. Almost all earthquakes and volcanoes cluster at the edges, so a named margin is the start of every tectonic answer, not a decoration.

Constructive (divergent) margins: plates move apart. Magma rises to fill the gap and cools as new crust. Under oceans this builds a mid-ocean ridge (Mid-Atlantic Ridge); on land it opens a rift valley (Thingvellir, Iceland). Volcanoes are typically basaltic and less explosive; earthquakes are usually shallow and moderate.

Destructive (convergent) margins: denser oceanic plate subducts beneath continental or oceanic crust. A deep ocean trench marks the bend. Water and sediment lower the melting point; sticky magma rises into composite volcanoes. Fold mountains form on the overriding plate (Andes, Japanese arcs). Earthquakes can be deep and violent.

Continent–continent collision (Himalayas) is a destructive meeting without subduction of ocean crust, so you get fold mountains and earthquakes but not a volcanic arc. Do not dump every collision into the same volcano diagram.

Conservative (transform) margins: plates slide past each other. Friction locks, strain builds, then the crust slips. Earthquakes only — no magma, no new crust, no destruction of crust. The San Andreas Fault in California is the named example. There are no volcanoes on the San Andreas.

Hotspots (Hawaii, Yellowstone) are mantle plumes that punch through a plate away from a margin. As the plate drifts, a chain of volcanoes and seamounts records the motion. They prove volcanism is not only a margin story.

Plates scrape; crust is neither created nor destroyed, so there is no magma. Putting a cone on the San Andreas is an instant process fail.
“At a destructive margin the denser oceanic plate subducts.”
Name density and the trench. “The plates crash and explode” does not describe melting or composite volcanoes.
“Hotspots can produce volcanoes away from plate margins.”
Hawaii is the named off-margin chain. Use it when a question asks why volcanoes are not only at boundaries.

Four diagrams you can say out loud
Constructive: two arrows pointing away from a ridge; a gap; magma rising from the mantle; new oceanic crust; a rift valley on land or a mid-ocean ridge under water. Earthquakes are usually shallow; lava is typically runny basalt. Destructive: arrows towards a trench; the denser oceanic slab bending down; a melting zone; sticky magma rising into a composite cone; fold mountains on the overriding plate. Conservative: two arrows sliding past a kinked fault; locked then slipping crust; no magma at all. Hotspot: a plume under a moving plate and a chain of islands getting older as you leave the active vent. If you can narrate those four pictures, you score the process marks before you name a disaster.

Why the San Andreas never grows a volcano
Students glue “earthquake and volcano” onto every margin because both words sit in the same textbook chapter. Conservative margins only release elastic strain. There is no gap for magma to fill and no descending slab to melt. California’s San Andreas is a transform boundary between the Pacific and North American plates: it generates powerful earthquakes (1906 San Francisco is the historical hook) and no volcanic arc. If a paper shows a sliding-past diagram, write earthquakes only. Save composite cones for subduction and shield volcanoes for constructive margins or hotspots. Mixing the three diagrams is the most expensive tectonic mistake in GCSE Geography because it collapses every later case study.

Hotspots are not a fourth margin
A hotspot is a plume, not a plate edge. Hawaii sits in the middle of the Pacific Plate. Magma punches through, builds a shield volcano, then the plate crawls on and the old island goes extinct while a new one starts over the plume. That age-chain is evidence of plate motion you can use in a 6-marker. Yellowstone is a continental hotspot with a different magma story, so name Hawaii unless your spec teaches the caldera. Do not call a hotspot constructive just because there is lava. The exam wants you to separate location (margin versus interior) from lava type. Get that split right and you can also explain why Iceland is both a constructive margin and a hotspot — two mechanisms stacked, which is why it is so volcanically lively.

Redraw one constructive, one destructive and one conservative sketch until the arrows and the magma (or its absence) are automatic. Then add San Andreas as the no-volcano named place.
