Cap rock is the whole trick

If the bed were uniform, you would get a steep slide, not a step. The Whin Sill is a tabular intrusion of hard dolerite. Beneath it, sedimentary rocks yield to hydraulic action and abrasion. Water explodes into the plunge pool, swirls load against the back wall, and eats the soft band. The dolerite roof becomes a cornice, then fails. Each failure shifts High Force a little towards the source and lengthens the gorge. That is why OS maps show a sudden contour crunch and a waterfall symbol: structure, not a river changing its mind. In four marks you need hard, soft, undercut, collapse. In six, add plunge pool, retreat and gorge, and say Tees. Forget “the river falls because it is in the mountains” — lots of mountain rivers have no High Force because they lack the sill.

Gorge versus V-shaped valley

A V-shaped valley is the normal upper-course form from vertical erosion and weathering of the sides, with interlocking spurs. A gorge at High Force is narrower, steeper, and specifically the wake of a retreating waterfall. Students mash them together and lose the landform mark. If the question is High Force, lead with cap rock and gorge. If it is upper course in general, you can mention both: the Tees has Vs and, where the sill crosses, a fall and gorge. Rejuvenation can also cut gorges, but you do not need that unless the spec taught knick points. Keep the taught story clean: sill, undercut, retreat, gorge. Take a mental photo of the brown dolerite lip and the white water — that image is your memory hook in the hall.

Processes are the same names as the coast

Hydraulic action, abrasion, attrition, solution — rivers use the same menu as waves, in a confined channel. At High Force, hydraulic action and abrasion do the undercutting; attrition works the boulders in the pool; solution can affect limestone bands. Vertical erosion dominates because the gradient and the step concentrate energy downward. Lateral erosion is a meander story for later in the valley. When a question says “explain the formation of a waterfall”, do not wander into oxbow lakes. Stay on the sandwich. Named place plus named rock plus two processes plus retreat is the full recipe. That discipline is what separates a geography answer from a scenery description.
