150-word writing
Higher GCSE Spanish 150-word writing: four bullets, more complexity than the 90-word task, three time frames, and how to develop ideas without drowning in errors.
Four bullets. About 150 words. Three time frames still. Upgrade with clauses, not with a fourth topic you were not asked for.
The important bits
What you need to know
- 1
The 150-word task is Higher. Cover every bullet. Four prompts is the usual shape; some papers print two broader ones that still need full development.
- 2
Write about 150 words. Everything is marked. A 250-word ramble usually adds major errors without adding bands.
- 3
Content still rewards coverage and clear, developed ideas. Language rewards range, complexity and successful time frames.
- 4
You still need past, present and future, mainly successful. Extra length is for development, not for dropping a time frame.
- 5
Complexity that scores: porque / ya que, cuando, que, si, a comparative, a connective other than y, one justified opinion per bullet.
- 6
A 90-word answer is three tight mini-paragraphs. A 150-word answer is the same spine with a second detail, a contrast or a relative clause on each bullet.
- 7
Plan four boxes: bullet, tense magnet, opinion, extra clause. Then write. Then spend five minutes on verbs, gustar, ser/estar and agreements.
- 8
Choose the question you can develop. Accurate family-and-school Spanish with clauses beats a broken environment essay full of nouns.
Quotations worth analysing
Short evidence. Real method.
“Ahora estudio español, que me parece útil. El año pasado visité Madrid, donde comí tapas, y el año que viene volveré porque quiero mejorar.”
Present, past and future, plus que, donde and porque. That is the upgrade from a 90-word skeleton: same tenses, more joining.
“Me llevo bien con mi hermana, que es deportista, aunque a veces discutimos. Sin embargo, el sábado pasado entrenamos juntos.”
Relative que, aunque and sin embargo turn one person into a paragraph. This is what the extra sixty words are for.
“Se debe reciclar, y en mi casa separamos el plástico. La semana pasada planté un árbol y el año que viene iré al instituto en bici.”
Obligation, present habit, preterite proof, future plan. One Higher bullet can still carry all three time frames if you let it.

How is the 150-word task different from 90 words?
Same exam skills, longer runway. You still cover every bullet and you still need three time frames. The extra words are for development: a second reason, a contrast, a when-clause, a relative que, a comparative. They are not for a fifth topic or for showing off a subjunctive you cannot spell. Communication still caps if a bullet is a title with no sentence. Language still stalls if everything sits in the present. Think of 90 words as the skeleton and 150 as the same skeleton with muscle. If your 90-word piece is already inaccurate, writing sixty more words will not rescue it. Fix the verbs first, then extend the best bullet by one clause.

What complexity is worth the risk?
Safe complexity is joining. El instituto que está cerca de mi casa es más grande que el antiguo, así que voy a pie. Cuando era niño, jugaba cada día, pero el año pasado dejé el rugby. Si hace sol, saldré. Gustar in a new person: a mi padre le gusta correr. A conditional you know: me gustaría volver. Unsafe complexity is a half-remembered subjunctive, a paragraph of infinitives, or English word order. A major error blocks meaning: wrong person, wrong tense, or a sentence nobody can parse. Minor slips on accents still let the message through. Two controlled clauses beat five broken fireworks. Use the language from family, school, holidays and health that you can actually conjugate.

How do I plan four bullets in 150 words?
Thirty-five to forty words a bullet is a useful ceiling. Open each with a time magnet so frames do not clump in one paragraph. Bullet 1 present habit plus porque. Bullet 2 past event plus opinion. Bullet 3 future plus voy a or simple future. Bullet 4 contrast or obligation: sin embargo, se debe, aunque. Example: Normalmente como verduras. El sábado jugué un partido. El año que viene iré al gimnasio. Se debe dormir más, aunque a veces uso el móvil. That is already a healthy-living Higher answer. Add one relative and one comparative where they fit. Do not open bullet 5. Sequence with primero only if the bullets are a story. Separate paragraphs keep the examiner’s tick list clean.
See the idea in action
Bullets: family / last holiday / school / next year. Me llevo bien con mi hermano, que es simpático, porque entrenamos juntos. El año pasado fui a Valencia en tren; hizo sol y visité el centro. Mi instituto es bastante grande y estudio español, que me gusta ya que es útil. El año que viene haré un intercambio y voy a practicar más, aunque los exámenes me preocupan. Four bullets, three frames, clauses, about 150 words of room once you add one extra detail to the thinnest bullet.
Exam technique
Turn knowledge into marks
After writing, number the bullets in the margin and underline every verb in three colours: present, past, future. If a colour is missing, add one short sentence. Do not rewrite the piece.
Common mistakes
Do not give these marks away
- 01
Treating 150 words as a 90-word answer with waffle. Extra length must add a clause, a contrast or a second detail, not repetition.
- 02
Skipping a bullet because the other three were easier. Missing coverage still caps the content band.
- 03
Pushing for subjunctive display and collapsing the tenses. Clear three frames with porque will outscore a broken ojalá paragraph.
What is the main difference between the Higher 150-word task and the 90-word task?
AYou still cover every bullet and three time frames, but you must develop ideas with more complexity rather than simply writing a longer 90-word piece
BYou only need the present tense because 150 words is Higher
CYou can ignore one bullet if you write more than 150 words
Show the answer
You still cover every bullet and three time frames, but you must develop ideas with more complexity rather than simply writing a longer 90-word piece. Length is for development and range, not for dropping a bullet or a time frame. Present-only Higher answers still stall on language.
Quick questions
If this is the bit you searched
Is the 150-word question on Foundation?
No. It is the Higher extended write. Foundation students should master the 90-word task first. Higher students still sit a 90-word question as well.
Do I have to write exactly 150 words?
Approximately. A clear 140-word answer that covers the bullets beats a 200-word piece full of major errors. Count in the check, not during the first draft.
Do I need four time frames if there are four bullets?
No. Three time frames across the whole piece is the language requirement. You may repeat a frame. You may not live in only one.
Should I use the subjunctive?
Only if it is automatic. Cuando tenga tiempo is nice. A broken subjunctive is a major error. Porque, cuando plus indicative, and si plus present are safer complexity.
