Preterite tense

The completed past: regular -ar and -er/-ir stamps, plus fui, hice, tuve and the accents examiners expect.

UNDERSTANDRETRIEVEREMEMBER
THE MEMORY HOOK
Finished action, stamped ending. Yesterday needs an accent on yo and él: hablé, habló.

The important bits

What you need to know

  1. 1

Use the preterite for completed actions: what happened, when it finished, a specific past event.

  2. 2

Regular -ar: -é, -aste, -ó, -amos, -asteis, -aron. Hablé, hablaste, habló, hablamos, hablasteis, hablaron.

  3. 3

Regular -er and -ir share endings: -í, -iste, -ió, -imos, -isteis, -ieron. Comí, comió; viví, vivió.

  4. 4

Yo and él/ella/usted take a written accent: hablé versus habla, comió versus the accent-free misspelling comio.

  5. 5

Ser and ir share the same preterite: fui, fuiste, fue, fuimos, fuisteis, fueron. Context tells you was or went.

  6. 6

Hacer: hice, hiciste, hizo, hicimos, hicisteis, hicieron. Tener: tuve, tuviste, tuvo. Estar: estuve, estuvo.

  7. 7

Trigger phrases: ayer, anoche, el año pasado, el lunes pasado, hace dos días, de repente.

  8. 8

Nosotros -ar looks like the present (hablamos). A time phrase such as ayer tells the examiner it is preterite.

Quotations worth analysing

Short evidence. Real method.

Ayer hablé con mi profesora y luego jugué al fútbol.
Regular -ar preterite

Hablé and jugué are completed actions. The accent on -é marks yo. Ayer pulls the preterite, not the imperfect.

What are the regular preterite endings?

Think of the preterite as a stamp on a finished event. For -ar verbs the stamp is -é, -aste, -ó, -amos, -asteis, -aron. For -er and -ir it is -í, -iste, -ió, -imos, -isteis, -ieron. Comer and vivir therefore look like twins in the past: comí, viví; comió, vivió. The accents on yo and él are not decoration. Habla is present he speaks; habló is he spoke. Write the accent every time. Practise one -ar verb and one -er verb as a pair, saying ayer before each form so the tense and the time phrase travel together.

When do I use the preterite instead of the imperfect?

The preterite narrates what happened. The imperfect sets the scene. Ayer fui al instituto y hice un examen is a sequence of completed events, so preterite. Cuando era joven, jugaba al tenis todos los sábados is background and habit, so imperfect. In a story, imperfect paints the weather, the time and what people were like; preterite moves the plot: Hacía frío. De repente, llegó el autobús. GCSE writing needs both. A clean pattern is one imperfect background sentence, then two preterite events with ayer or el año pasado.

Which preterite verbs are irregular?

The irregulars are high-frequency, so they are worth memorising as lists. Ser and ir: fui, fuiste, fue, fuimos, fuisteis, fueron. Hacer: hice, hiciste, hizo. Tener: tuve, tuviste, tuvo. Estar: estuve, estuvo. Decir: dije, dijo. Poder: pude, pudo. Poner: puse, puso. Querer: quise, quiso. Venir: vine, vino. Traer: traje, trajo. Dar: di, dio, with no accent on dio. These forms do not take the regular -é or -í yo ending. In the 90-word task, fui, hice and tuve are enough to prove a past time frame if the rest of the verb is accurate.

WORKED EXAMPLE

See the idea in action

Prompt: say what you did last weekend. El sábado pasado jugué al fútbol con mis amigos. Luego comí una pizza y vi una película. Jugué, comí and vi are all completed. Each verb has the preterite stamp. El sábado pasado tells the examiner the time frame is past, not present.

Exam technique

Turn knowledge into marks

One accurate fui, hice or jugué with ayer is a past time frame. Do not stack six wobbly irregulars. Two clean preterites beat five invented ones.

Common mistakes

Do not give these marks away

  1. 01

Dropping the accent: hablo or hablo for I spoke. Yo preterite of hablar is hablé.

  2. 02

Using the present stem change in the preterite: yo pienso ayer instead of pensé, or yo duermo for dormí.

  3. 03

Writing fui when you needed iba, or the reverse. Fui is I went or I was (completed). Iba is I used to go or I was going.

QUICK RETRIEVAL

What is the él/ella preterite of hablar?

Ahabló

Bhabla

Chablaba

Show the answer

habló. Completed past, third person: drop -ar and add -ó. Habla is present. Hablaba is imperfect.

Quick questions

If this is the bit you searched

Is nosotros hablamos present or preterite?

Both. The forms are identical. Add a time phrase: ahora hablamos (present) versus ayer hablamos (preterite).

Do ser and ir really share fui?

Yes. Fui al cine is I went. Fui estudiante is I was a student, as a completed state. The rest of the sentence decides.
