GCSE History germ theory: why Pasteur’s 1861 idea that microbes cause decay and disease let doctors finally target infection — so treatments could change after the explanation changed.

Before germ theory, dominant explanations were the four humours, miasma (poisonous air), spontaneous generation (life appearing from rotting matter), and God. Treatments followed those maps: bleeding, sweet smells, prayer.

Louis Pasteur, a French chemist, showed in the late 1850s–1860s that fermentation and putrefaction were caused by microbes from the air, not by spontaneous generation. His swan-neck flask experiments (publicly decisive by 1861, developed through the 1860s) were the hinge.

Killing spontaneous generation mattered because if microbes come from other microbes, you can block their entry and kill them. That is the logic that unlocks antiseptics and vaccines.

Specificity is the treatment revolution. A humour is general; a bacillus is a target. Staining and culture turned a philosophy into a laboratory hunt.
“Upon this idea I based my antiseptic system.”
The best evidence that theory changed practice. Lister did not invent cleanliness as a vague virtue; he applied a new cause of putrefaction to surgical wounds.

Why treatments could change only after the idea changed

Medieval and Renaissance physicians were not lazy; they were aiming at the wrong enemy. If illness is unbalanced blood, you bleed. If it is miasma, you perfume the ward. Those actions can even help accidentally — removing filth reduces bacteria — but they cannot generate vaccines, antiseptic sprays or antibiotics. Pasteur’s germ theory (from 1861) reclassified infection as an invasion you might kill, keep out, or immunise against. Once that idea was accepted, inventors knew what to invent: carbolic for Lister (1867), cultured vaccines, Koch’s stains, later Salvarsan and penicillin. Government could then legislate for the right hazards (water, milk, isolation). Do not write “people got healthier”. Write: the target changed, so the weapons could.

Miasma’s awkward success
Chadwick’s 1842 Report and the 1875 Public Health Act improved sewers while many officials still believed in bad air. Death rates from cholera fell because removing filth removed germs as a side-effect. That fact tempts students to say theory did not matter. Counter it: miasma could justify drains, but it could not justify culturing a vaccine or spraying carbolic into a wound, and it misdirected some effort (killing cats in 1665; blaming smells not water until Snow). Germ theory explained why Snow’s 1854 Broad Street pump mattered and why Koch’s 1883 cholera bacillus made water policy scientific. Continuity of sanitation plus change of explanation is the mature judgement. Theory was not the only factor; it was the one that made later treatments aim true.

From idea to bedside: the lag
Ideas do not bathe patients. British surgeons resisted Lister; rural GPs still mixed humoural talk with new bottles; magic bullets waited on chemistry. Koch’s TB bacillus (1882) did not produce an immediate antibiotic — streptomycin comes in 1944. So germ theory is a necessary cause of modern treatment, not an instant cure-all. Examiners reward students who periodise: 1861–80s explanation and first applications (Lister, vaccines); 1875 law for environment; 1909–1940s chemical and biological drugs; 1948 NHS for access. The “why treatments changed after the idea changed” question is therefore about unlocking possibility, then about the other factors that delivered it to ordinary people.

Use the sentence “treatments follow diagnosis”. Then show one old diagnosis (humour/miasma) and one new weapon (carbolic, vaccine, antibiotic). That is the germ-theory argument in miniature.

No. Spontaneous generation and miasma had defenders for years. Koch’s laboratory proofs and practical wins (Lister, vaccines) converted the profession unevenly, especially in Britain.

Miasma blames poisonous air in general. Germ theory blames specific living organisms that can travel in air, water or contact. Both can encourage cleaning; only germ theory can aim a vaccine or an antibiotic.
Where does John Snow fit if Pasteur comes later?
Snow (1854) showed cholera mapped onto a water pump — a transmission story without a seen microbe. Germ theory later explained why the pump killed. Evidence of water-borne disease preceded the full theory.
Why mention spontaneous generation?
If life can appear from rotting meat by itself, you cannot stop infection by blocking incoming germs. Pasteur’s flasks killed that idea, which is why they belong in a treatments essay, not only a science lesson.
