The Black Death
GCSE History on the 1348–49 Black Death: what English people thought caused it, how they tried to stop it, and why treatments failed without a true cause.
A third of England died because the cause was guessed as God, planets and miasma — not Yersinia pestis.

The Black Death reached England in 1348 and peaked in 1349, killing perhaps one-third of the population. Most historians identify the pathogen as Yersinia pestis, spread by fleas on rats and then person to person in pneumonic form.

Learned explanations blamed a 1345 planetary conjunction that corrupted the air (miasma), God’s punishment for sin, and sometimes poisoned wells. Each explanation dictated a different response.

Religious treatments included prayer, confession, processions and flagellants on the Continent. English bishops ordered masses; some chroniclers still saw repentance as the only real medicine.

Public-health style responses did exist: some towns tried to clean streets, quarantine strangers, or close markets. These were local, temporary and based on miasma, not germs.

Medical treatments followed the humours: bleeding, purging, lancing buboes, vinegar and sweet-smelling fires. They could not stop a bacterial pandemic.

Social consequences were huge: labour shortage, the 1351 Statute of Labourers trying to freeze wages, and later tension that fed the 1381 Peasants’ Revolt. Medicine questions should still keep one eye on those effects.

Scapegoating occurred across Europe; in England the main story is fear, flight and religious interpretation rather than a single royal public-health programme.

The plague returned in later waves (1361–62, and periodically into the seventeenth century). Continuity of explanation is the point: 1348 did not produce germ theory.
Quotations worth analysing
Short evidence. Real method.
“So great a mortality… that the living could scarce bury the dead.”
A contemporary sense of scale. Use it to show that authorities recognised catastrophe yet still prescribed prayer and burial rites, not a new medical theory.
“The pestilence was sent by God to punish the sins of men.”
If God is the cause, the logical treatment is repentance. That is why flagellation and masses sit in the same paragraph as bleeding: both follow from the stated cause.
“Bad air rising from the earth and from unburied corpses.”
Miasma encouraged some cleaning and flight from towns. It also encouraged lighting fires and sniffing pomanders — activity that looked like prevention while missing the flea–rat–bacteria chain.

Cause, response, failure — the GCSE chain
Examiners mark the link, not the horror. People in 1348 acted rationally inside their knowledge. If planets corrupted the air, you flee the town or purify it with fire. If God is angry, you process and confess. If humours are unbalanced, you bleed. None of those targeted Yersinia pestis. Local attempts to keep strangers out show a public-health instinct without a national state machine. Compare this with 1665 Great Plague orders (shutting houses, killing cats and dogs, watchmen) to show continuity of miasma thinking three centuries later. The Black Death is therefore a case study in why treatments cannot leap ahead of explanation. Do not write “they panicked”. Write which theory produced which action, and why it failed.

Consequences beyond the death toll
A medicine paper may still ask how the Black Death changed England. Labour became scarce; survivors could demand higher wages; the 1351 Statute of Labourers tried to freeze that. Landlords switched some land to pasture. The Church lost priests and prestige when prayers did not stop the dying. Later plague waves kept the trauma alive. For Medicine through Time, the key consequence is negative: the disaster did not produce a scientific revolution. Universities still taught Galen. That “failed turning point” is a sophisticated judgement — better than claiming 1348 “led to modern medicine”.

What we know that they did not
Yersinia pestis was identified by Alexandre Yersin in 1894, after Pasteur and Koch had made germ theory usable. That date is your reminder not to smuggle bacteria into 1348 answers as if peasants were simply ignoring a textbook. Pneumonic spread, fleas and black rats are historians’ reconstruction from chronicles plus later science. In the exam, keep the two layers separate: what they believed then, and what caused it in our terms. Mixing them produces anachronism, which costs marks and looks like you have not understood the course’s whole point about changing explanations.
See the idea in action
Question: “Medieval treatments for the Black Death were useless because people were superstitious.” How far? Judgement: superstition is too crude. Religious responses followed a coherent God-as-cause theory; humoural bleeding followed Galen; miasma cleaning sometimes reduced filth. They were useless against Yersinia pestis because the cause was wrong, not because people refused to think. A stronger answer distinguishes supernatural, miasmatic and humoural actions, then concludes that without a true cause no treatment could succeed at national scale.

Turn knowledge into marks
Always pair a believed cause with a treatment. “They prayed” is incomplete. “They prayed because they thought God had sent the pestilence” is history.

Did any town succeed in keeping the plague out?
Some Italian cities developed quarantine later; English responses were patchier. Even strict local measures could not fully stop fleas, trade and pneumonic spread. Success, where it happened, was partial and temporary.
Was the Black Death only bubonic plague?
Chronicles describe buboes and also coughing blood, which historians link to pneumonic plague. You do not need to debate strains in the exam; you do need to explain contemporary theories.
How is 1348 different from the Great Plague of 1665?
Scale and memory differ, but the explanation of disease had still not become germ theory. 1665 shows more organised parish regulation, not a scientific leap.
