GCSE Geography ecosystems at scale: global biomes, transects from equator to poles, ocean and freshwater systems, interdependence, and why maps beat lists.
Biomes are climate written on the land — move latitude or altitude and you change the cast, not just the costumes.

An ecosystem is biotic (living) and abiotic (non-living) components interacting: energy flow, nutrient cycling, habitats and niches. Scale runs from a pond to the biosphere.

Global biomes follow climate belts: equatorial rainforest, tropical grassland (savanna), hot desert, Mediterranean scrub, temperate deciduous forest, boreal taiga, tundra, polar ice — plus mountain vertical zonation.

Latitude controls insolation and seasonality; oceans moderate coasts; rain-shadow deserts sit behind mountains; continental interiors swing extreme.

Reading a global biome map under exam pressure
Equator: rainforest then maybe savanna then desert belts as cells shift. Mid-latitudes: Mediterranean on west coasts where applicable, temperate forest inland, then taiga and tundra poleward. Mountains duplicate latitude in altitude — Andes from cloud forest to ice. Coast versus interior: UK maritime temperate versus Russian continental extremes. A 4-mark “describe distribution” should name latitude, rain and temperature pattern, and one located example (Sahel savanna, Sahara desert, Amazon rainforest).

Ocean ecosystems are not empty blue
Productivity peaks where nutrients upwell (Peru current fisheries) or sunlight meets nutrients (coasts). Coral reefs occupy tiny area with huge biodiversity. Open ocean is a desert with scattered life. Human scale: overfishing collapses cod; plastic aggregates in gyres; warming shifts fish stocks north. GCSE answers tie abiotic (light, nutrients, temperature) to biotic (plankton → fish → seabirds). Management: quotas, MPAs, reduce runoff from farming that causes dead zones (Gulf of Mexico).
