    Cattle ranching is the largest single use of cleared Amazon land: cheap pasture for beef, often on land made accessible by highways. Pasture can degrade within a few years as nutrients wash out, pushing the frontier further on.

Cattle, soya and the road as one system

Treat the causes as a sequence. A highway or logging track reaches a plot. Speculators clear forest, often with fire in the dry season. Cattle occupy cheap pasture with little labour. As soil fertility falls or land titles are “regularised”, soya farmers with capital buy the already-cleared land and push ranchers to the next fringe. Ports and crushers on the Amazon and at Santarém lock the interior into global feed markets. Mining and dams add nodes of demand for timber and food. In a 6-mark “explain causes” answer, do not dump five industries in a list. Show how access, protein markets and weak tenure reinforce each other. That causal chain is what separates a geography answer from a poster of sad trees.

Local mud, global carbon

Locally, bare soil under tropical rain erodes; rivers silt; fish and river transport suffer; indigenous hunting grounds shrink; new settlements lack services. Globally, burning and rotting biomass add carbon dioxide; a thinner canopy stores less carbon in future; lost species cannot be imported back from a zoo. Moisture that trees recycled inland may fail, stressing farms in São Paulo state and beyond — a teleconnection, not a local sad story. Exam questions often split “effects on people” and “effects on the environment” or “local and global”. Pre-pack two sentences for each cell so you do not freeze. Never write only “animals die” and “climate change”. Name a river, a reserve, or a carbon store.

Selective logging and reserves without fairy tales

Reduced-impact selective logging takes marked trees, plans skid trails, and leaves seed trees — cheaper damage than clear-felling, still a commercial forest. It fails when crews high-grade mahogany and walk away, or when a track becomes a ranch road. Conservation units and indigenous territories work when the state defends boundaries and communities have livelihoods from nuts, rubber or tourism. They fail when gold miners invade or when parks exist only on paper. Agroforestry and certification try to sell standing forest. For evaluation, pick one success (a named extractive reserve or Kayapó land defence) and one limit (leakage: protection here, clearance next door). Sustainability in the Amazon is politics plus markets, not a recycling logo.
