General conversation
GCSE French general conversation after the photo card: develop answers, use past and future, and ask the teacher a question when your board requires it.

What you need to know

General conversation is the unprepared speaking that follows the photo card. It is a large share of the speaking mark. Photo description is only the launch.

Develop every answer: conjugated verb, opinion, parce que, one extra detail. Oui, non and j’aime bien are not answers.

You will be asked about more than one theme. Prepare family, school, free time, holidays, environment and health with two past and two future sentences each.

Past and future must appear. A fluent present-only chat still misses the range the mark scheme wants.

If your board requires you to ask the teacher a question, do it. AQA-style tests often park that task on the role-play; Edexcel-style conversation often wants questions in the chat. Prepare two anyway.

Question frames: Et vous ? Qu’est-ce que vous avez fait le week-end dernier ? Quelle est votre matière préférée ? Où irez-vous cet été ? Match tu or vous to the teacher.

If you do not understand, say Vous pouvez répéter, s’il vous plaît ? Then answer the bit you caught. Silence scores zero. A short relevant sentence scores something.

You may glance at notes from the 15-minute preparation, but conversation is not a script. Listen to the actual question.
Quotations worth analysing
Short evidence. Real method.
“Oui, j’aime le foot parce que je joue chaque samedi avec mes amis. Samedi dernier j’ai joué un match et l’année prochaine je vais essayer le rugby.”
Not a bare oui. Opinion, parce que, past match, future sport. That is a conversation turn worth marks.
“Vous pouvez répéter, s’il vous plaît ? J’étudie le français et je m’entends bien avec ma prof parce qu’elle est patiente.”
Buying a second is allowed. Then a full idea. Do not freeze after the repeat request.
“Et vous, qu’est-ce que vous avez fait le week-end dernier ?”
A complete interrogative, not just et vous ? Boards that require a student question need a real verb in the question.

How should I develop an answer in conversation?
Use a four-beat bar. Answer with a verb. Add an opinion. Add parce que plus a reason. Add a past or future extra. Est-ce que tu fais du sport ? Oui, je joue au foot trois fois par semaine parce que ça me garde en forme. Samedi dernier j’ai joué et nous avons gagné. That is thirty seconds of credit. The teacher may then follow up; do not repeat the same sentence. Switch person or time: Mon frère joue aussi. L’année prochaine je m’entraînerai plus. Prepare this bar on six topics so you are not inventing structure in the room. Short answers die even if your accent is pretty. Markers cannot reward a noun. They can reward a clause.

Where do past and future actually go?
Do not wait to be asked qu’est-ce que tu as fait. Offer them. After a present habit, add L’année dernière… or Samedi dernier… After an opinion, add L’année prochaine… or Je vais… If the teacher asks a past question, stay in the perfect or imperfect on purpose: je suis allé(e), j’ai joué, c’était, il y avait. If they ask a future, use j’irai, je ferai or je vais. Mixing hier je vais collapses the frame. Keep two ready-made pasts and two futures per theme on your prep notes: a match, a trip, a contrôle, a visit; a gym plan, a holiday, a job, an exchange. Then you are never hunting for a verb while the clock runs.

When must I ask the teacher a question?
Check your board. On many AQA-style speaking tests the compulsory student question sits on the role-play, and conversation is you answering. On Edexcel-style conversation you are often expected to ask the teacher questions as part of the unprepared talk. The safe habit is to ask one anyway at a pause: Et vous, vous aimez le foot ? Qu’est-ce que vous avez fait hier ? Où irez-vous en été ? Use vous with most teachers unless they have set tu. A tag et vous ? with no verb may not count as a question. If you forget, ask at the next pause rather than interrupting mid-question. Never switch to English to ask. A late French question still belongs to the test.

In the 15-minute prep, do not script the photo. Jot two past and two future sentences for the theme on the card and for your nominated conversation theme. Those four lines rescue the chat.

One-word answers: oui, non, le foot, j’aime. Each turn needs a conjugated verb and a reason.

Present tense only, even after qu’est-ce que tu as fait ? or qu’est-ce que tu vas faire ? Echo the time frame in the question.

Never asking a question on a board that requires it, or asking in English. Prepare two French interrogatives.

Can I use notes in the conversation?
You may glance at what you wrote in supervised preparation. You must not read a speech. If the teacher asks something that is not on your notes, still answer.
What if I go blank?
Buy a second with Vous pouvez répéter, s’il vous plaît ? Then fire a survival sentence from the theme: Dans ma famille nous sommes quatre. J’aime le français parce que c’est utile. Hier je suis allé(e) au collège. Any conjugated sentence beats silence.
Do I have to nominate a theme?
On several UK boards you choose one conversation theme in advance and the teacher brings another. Prepare both. Do not only revise the photo card.
Tu or vous with the teacher?
Follow what your teacher uses in mocks. If unsure, vous is the polite default: qu’est-ce que vous avez fait ? Switching randomly looks messy.
