Urban fieldwork methods

GCSE Geography urban-enquiry skills: environmental quality scores, pedestrian counts, land-use mapping and questionnaires — how to collect human data that can actually test a hypothesis about a UK high street or CBD.

    A human enquiry needs a measurable question: “EQS declines with distance from the peak land-value intersection” or “pedestrian counts are higher on the precinct than on the ring road”. If you cannot put it on a graph, it is not an enquiry.

    Environmental quality surveys (EQS): a bipolar scale (e.g. −2 to +2 or 1 to 5) on litter, traffic noise, greenery, building condition, safety. Several sites along a transect. Two students score independently to check reliability. Subjectivity is the known flaw — say so.

    Pedestrian counts: a timed tally (e.g. 5 minutes) at a stated point, in a stated direction, at a stated time. Repeat. A Saturday 14:00 precinct count is not Monday 08:00. Time of day is a control variable, not a surprise.

    Land-use mapping: Goad-style frontage categories (retail, residential, public, derelict, office). A choropleth or colour map plus a transect of use versus distance. Photographs as annotated evidence, not as a holiday album.

    Questionnaires: closed questions for graphs, one open question for quality. Sampling rule (every fifth person, or stratified by age) written down. Ethics: consent, no under-16s without protocol, do not block a doorway. Ten mates is not a sample of the town.

    Secondary data: Census, crime maps, house prices, Google satellite, council footfall. Use them to check whether your Tuesday matches the place. Both primary and secondary can be biased.

    Presentation: located bars for counts, isoline or choropleth for EQS, pie or divided bar for land use, scatter for EQS versus distance. Wrong graph (pie for a transect) is a classic miss.

    Evaluation: subjectivity of EQS, weather, a closed shop, who refused the survey, sample size, one time-slice. Propose a weekday/Saturday pair, more scorers, GIS pins. Link each flaw to the conclusion.

EQS: make the subjective countable

Write a bipolar scale before you leave school: litter, chewing gum, traffic noise, facade quality, graffiti, trees, perceived safety. Train two scorers on a practice photo so “−1” means the same thing. At each site, stand in a stated place, score independently, then average. Plot scores against distance from a CBD peak or a regenerated quay. The method is still subjective — different ages fear different streets — but it is better than “this bit felt rough”. Reliability: two scorers, not one. Accuracy is the wrong word for an opinion scale; talk about consistency and bias instead. Improvement: more sites, a sound-meter for noise, a litter count as a harder number beside the EQS. Mixing a hard count with a scale is sophisticated, not indecisive.

Pedestrians and land use as a pair

Footfall tests whether a precinct is actually used. Count for a fixed window, both directions or stated direction, several sites, then compare with land use. If the map shows comparison goods and your counts are high, theory holds; if a new supermarket on the edge has stolen the high street, counts will sag — an economic geography result, not a failed day. Do not count from a moving walk. Do not include the same person twice if they pace. Lunch hour versus closing time can invert a pattern; that is why time is in the method table. Land-use categories must be agreed (is a charity shop retail?). A GIS pin or annotated OS extract locates the evidence. Analysis is pattern, anomaly (a closed unit, a market day), then theory (distance-decay, regeneration, doughnut retail).

Questionnaires without a vox-pop

Design fewer than ten questions, mostly closed, piloted so nobody stares. Sampling: systematic every fifth adult, or a stratified quota (age bands). Record refusals — a high refusal rate in suits at 08:30 means you missed commuters. Never claim a sample of 25 is “Bristol”. Use the results to test a hypothesis (“visitors came for the harbour museum, not for clothes”) and triangulate with counts and EQS. Ethics: explain the school, offer withdrawal, avoid sensitive income questions unless the teacher approved a banded tick-box. Evaluation: leading questions, social-desirability bias (“I recycle”), weather that emptied the street. Fix: online follow-up, a second day, a larger n. The enquiry structure still holds: question, method, presentation, analysis, conclusion, evaluation. A street interview is not automatically geography until that spine is visible.
