He poses the novel as a closed question. Golding answers with a boulder: the hunters will not debate; they will erase the speaker.
“Life is scientific, that’s what it is.”
Rational diction against nightmare. The line is brave and doomed: science cannot soothe boys who need a monster they can hunt.
“I know there isn’t no beast… not with claws and all that… unless we get frightened of people.”
He almost reaches Simon’s insight, in clumsier grammar. Fear of people is the real claw. The others cannot bear a beast that looks like them.

Why does Golding make the intelligent boy easy to mock?
Piggy’s asthma, weight, glasses and nickname are not decoration. Golding loads him with the marks of a boy the English classroom already knows how to bully. Class accent and “auntie” make him sound wrong in Ralph’s elected world as well as in Jack’s tribe. The nasty joke is that the person who can think cannot look like a leader, so the group follows hair and hunting instead. When you write, treat the body as method: vulnerability is how the novel shows that reason needs protection it does not get. Context about 1950s class and grammar-school snobbery can sharpen this if it returns to the nickname Ralph betrays and the glasses the hunters steal. Pity without analysis is a low-level paragraph.

Do not list “glasses = science” and move on. Track the object as a changing tool. At first the lenses kindle rescue; later they are a stolen weapon for Jack’s meat-fire; finally they are smashed with their owner. That is structure doing theme. Piggy without sight is the mind of the island going dark, which is why Ralph weeps for the “true, wise friend” in the same breath as “the darkness of man’s heart”. Pair a glasses quotation with Castle Rock so the essay shows process, not a symbol dump. Golding is blunt on purpose: when the group prefers hunt to thought, it does not argue with the thinker. It takes his eyes.

He is the last person still asking for procedure while standing on a rock surrounded by painted boys. The conch in his hands at death yokes two symbols so you should not split them. Savagery here is not only Jack’s chant; it is the group’s refusal to let a fat, clever, working-class-coded boy finish a sentence. Use Ralph as the handsome front and Piggy as the argument behind it: when both fall, liberal order had no muscle. A high-level paragraph will also admit Piggy’s limits — he wants rules, still dismisses the littluns’ fear, still clings to “English” adult logic that cannot name the evil Simon sees. Reason without imagination is another kind of blindness.
