Macbeth characters
Revise Macbeth, Lady Macbeth, Banquo, Macduff and the witches as a system of foils, not a cast list to memorise.
Every major character is a mirror: Banquo of conscience, Macduff of loyalty, Lady Macbeth of will turning to wreckage.
The important bits
What you need to know
- 1
Macbeth is imaginative, soldierly and morally aware—then increasingly isolated.
- 2
Lady Macbeth uses manhood as a weapon, then loses the control she demanded.
- 3
Banquo proves that prophecy does not force murder; character still chooses.
- 4
Macduff’s personal loss turns political resistance into felt justice.
- 5
Duncan’s trust makes the crime worse: the murdered king is a guest and a kinsman.
- 6
The witches externalise temptation without removing human responsibility.
- 7
Malcolm’s testing scene restores an idea of kingship Macbeth has destroyed.
Quotations worth analysing
Short evidence. Real method.
“Yet do I fear thy nature; / It is too full o’ the milk of human kindness.”
Lady Macbeth diagnoses conscience as weakness; Shakespeare later shows that the “milk” she scorns was the last check on tyranny.
“I dare do all that may become a man.”
Macbeth tries to separate courage from crime; Lady Macbeth redefines manhood as willingness to murder.
“He has no children.”
Macduff’s grief is spare and devastating; it turns Macbeth’s violence into an attack on the future itself.

How do Macbeth and Lady Macbeth swap roles?
Early on she plans, mocks hesitation and manages appearances. He sees the moral cost more clearly in soliloquy. After Duncan’s death the pattern reverses: Macbeth orders Banquo’s murder without her, seeks the witches alone and becomes the source of further blood. She sleepwalks, reliving the night she thought she could control. The marriage that launched the crime cannot survive its consequences.

Why is Banquo essential even after he dies?
Alive, he is the road not taken: ambitious enough to hear prophecy, loyal enough not to kill. As a ghost he is Macbeth’s guilt made theatrical, visible to the king and invisible to the court. That split—public banquet, private horror—is how Shakespeare stages tyranny’s loneliness. Banquo’s line also threatens Macbeth’s future, so the murder is political as well as psychological.
See the idea in action
Write Banquo as a foil, not a victim: “Shakespeare uses Banquo to prove that supernatural temptation is not fate. Both men hear prophecy; only Macbeth converts it into murder, so character, not the witches, makes the tragedy.”
Exam technique
Turn knowledge into marks
If the question names a character, still connect them to a wider idea: kingship, masculinity, loyalty or guilt.
