Love and Relationships exam questions

AQA-style comparison method for Love and Relationships: named poem plus one other, how to pair, comparative paragraphs from the first sentence, typical stems, timing, and a model thesis you can reuse.

UNDERSTANDRETRIEVEREMEMBER
THE MEMORY HOOK
One idea, two poems, from the first sentence. The named poem is the banker; the second is a chosen contrast in attitude or power — not a second biography.

The important bits

What you need to know

  1. 1

Typical AQA Lit Paper 2 question: compare how poets present X in the printed named poem and one other from the Love and Relationships cluster. Other boards test the same skill: idea, methods, comparison, judgement.

  2. 2

Stems repeat: romantic love; family; memory; distance; power in relationships; loss; reconciliation; difficult marriage. Learn pairs by stem, not favourites alone.

  3. 3

Open with a thesis naming both poems and a precise difference. “Both are about love” is thin. “Both show love through distance, but Day-Lewis releases the child while Armitage measures the tape still connecting mother and son” is an argument.

  4. 4

Every paragraph comparative from sentence one: whereas, unlike, more bitterly, more playfully. Two mini-essays glued with “similarly” cap marks.

  5. 5

Methods beat plot: dramatic monologue, dialect refrain, extended metaphor, parted lovers’ rhyme, swan pivot, locked door. Always tied to short quotation and effect.

  6. 6

Context is a clause that changes reading: Byron’s scandal, rural marriage pressure, Nagra’s shop voice, military PTSD. Not a third poem called “Victorian society.”

  7. 7

Timing: about 45 minutes. Ten minutes annotate named poem and choose pair; thirty write three comparative paragraphs plus judgement; five check names and quotations.

  8. 8

Choose the second poem for tension. Same idea, different attitude: Neutral Tones with Winter Swans; Porphyria’s Lover with Singh Song!; Follower with Walking Away; Manhunt with Winter Swans; Before You Were Mine with Mother Any Distance.

Quotations worth analysing

Short evidence. Real method.

Both poems present X, but they do so differently.
Comparative topic sentence template — fill X from the question

Promises shared theme plus contrast. Examiners hear the difference between this and “Poem A is about family. Poem B is too.”

Compare how poets present parental relationships in Follower and one other poem.
Typical AQA-style stem (family)

The named poem is printed for a reason — stay close. Your second poem must serve parental distance or admiration, not a generic love essay.

love / Is proved in the letting go versus slackening towards endlessness
Model quotation-pair for parent-child distance

Two short phrases already compare release versus tether. Build the paragraph around that difference, not two retold childhoods.

How to pair in the first two minutes

Read the stem, not memory. If it says power in relationships, do not import Winter Swans because it is gentle. Banker pairs: difficult love — Porphyria’s Lover and Farmer’s Bride; memory — Neutral Tones, When We Two Parted, Before You Were Mine; family distance — Walking Away, Mother Any Distance, Follower; reconciliation — Winter Swans, Singh Song!; pain without repair — Neutral Tones, When We Two Parted, Manhunt. Write a three-word difference at the top: “frozen / thawing”; “locks door / opens shop”; “lets go / measures tape.” If you cannot state it, wrong pair. Named poem gets slightly more quotation; second still needs two precise lines.

A comparative paragraph that actually compares

Model shape: (1) Both present [idea], but [named] [method/attitude] whereas [other] [contrast]. (2) Quote named + zoom. (3) Quote other + method. (4) Judgement linked to stem. Example: Both Browning and Mew show men who cannot accept a woman’s separateness, but Browning’s lover murders to freeze a moment while Mew’s farmer imprisons a living bride. “Mine, mine, fair” versus “locked her in her room”; hair as weapon versus hare flight. Browning’s speaker is triumphantly deluded; Mew’s farmer is baffled and still outside the door. That last sentence is AO3 without lecture. Three such paragraphs beat five thin ones.

Timing, accuracy, and judgement

Write poet names and titles correctly: Byron, Browning, Duffy, Heaney, Armitage, Nagra, Mew, Sheers, Day-Lewis. Do not import Power and Conflict poems in the exam unless the paper allows — clusters are separate on AQA. Conclusions: one comparative sentence — more equal, more bitter, more playful, more repaired. “Both poets present love effectively” is not judgement. “Duffy reclaims her mother’s youth; Hardy prosecutes love itself” is. If time is short, one fully comparative paragraph plus tight second poem beats four unfinished stories.

WORKED EXAMPLE

See the idea in action

Question: Compare how poets present distance in a relationship in Neutral Tones and one other poem. Model thesis: Both Hardy and Sheers present lovers emotionally apart within a winter landscape, but Hardy’s memory stays ash-grey and generalises love into deceit while Sheers moves from silence to joined hands after the swans. Paragraph 1: grey pond and dead smile versus grey faces in the lake. Paragraph 2: philosophical close versus swans “righting.” Paragraph 3: no repair versus “hands swum the distance.” Close: Hardy ends love; Sheers tentatively continues it.

Exam technique

Turn knowledge into marks

Annotate the named poem for the stem word — memory, power, family — before choosing the pair. Beautiful essays on the wrong idea fail the question.

Common mistakes

Do not give these marks away

  1. 01

Writing everything about the named poem then bolting on one line about the second.

  2. 02

Choosing a second poem that shares topic but not the stem’s angle (e.g. romantic pair for a parent question).

  3. 03

Treating poems as autobiography instead of constructed voice.

QUICK RETRIEVAL

What should the first sentence of a Love and Relationships comparison paragraph do?

ARetell the named poem’s plot only

BName a shared idea and a precise difference of method or attitude between both poems

CList every technique in the cluster

DCopy the question in longer words

Show the answer

Name a shared idea and a precise difference of method or attitude between both poems. Comparison from sentence one is the skill. Plot-summary paragraphs plateau mid-mark.

Quick questions

If this is the bit you searched

How many poems should I revise in depth?

Know any named poem could be printed; have two partners per stem. Depth on methods beats shallow coverage of all fifteen.

Can I use Power and Conflict poems?

Not in standard AQA cluster comparison — stay in Love and Relationships unless the paper specifies otherwise.

What if I forget a quotation?

Paraphrase a precise image (blue peering eyes, foetus of metal, Marilyn red shoes) and still compare methods. Do not invent lines.

Is a conclusion required?

A short judged sentence naming both poems is enough. Do not start a new pair in the last minute.
