Responsibility in An Inspector Calls
How Priestley presents responsibility in An Inspector Calls: individual blame, collective “one body”, the chain of events, and the ending that tests whether guilt needs a policeman.

Quotations worth analysing
Short evidence. Real method.
“Public men, Mr Birling, have responsibilities as well as privileges.”
A direct inversion of Birling’s after-dinner creed. Office and wealth are recoded as duties.
“We are responsible for each other.”
The simplest sentence in the play, and the one the ending tests. “Each other” includes the girl who will never dine here.
“But the way some of these cranks talk and write now, you’d think everybody has to look after everybody else.”
He names Priestley’s thesis as a joke before the Inspector arrives. Irony makes the whole play an answer to this sneer.

Individual or collective — which does Priestley want?
Both, in sequence. Each Birling must admit a particular act; then the Inspector forbids them to treat that act as private. Collective responsibility is not a way of hiding (“we’re all to blame” as mush). It is a way of connecting. A high-band essay will say Priestley uses a detective form — who did it? — to smuggle a socialist answer: you all did, differently. The chain metaphor matters: remove one link and Eva might have lived, but the play will not let any link call itself harmless. War imagery at the end says that a society of Birlings produces anguish at scale, not only one inquest.

How does the ending rewrite responsibility?
If Goole was a hoax, the legal case collapses. Gerald and the parents try to restore the party. Sheila and Eric argue that the moral case does not need a badge. Then the phone call — a girl dead, an inspector coming — restores particular consequence. Priestley has it both ways: the lesson was true even if the policeman was not, and history will send another inspector anyway. For exams, this is structure as theme. Do not treat the twist as a cheap shock. It is a test of whether responsibility is internal. The play’s hope is the children; its warning is that the parents will only kneel to a real policeman.

How do I keep this from becoming a politics rant?
Stay in the text. Name a method every time you mention socialism: irony (Titanic), lighting, the photograph’s one-at-a-time reveal, the trap of Mrs Birling’s speech, the register of “install” versus “people”. Context earns marks when it explains why a 1945 audience would hear “one body” as a live argument about the Welfare State, not when you write a paragraph on Priestley’s biography. End judgements with the play: who learns, who does not, what the doorbell did.
