Dr Jekyll character analysis

GCSE Jekyll and Hyde: Henry Jekyll as respectable scientist, repressed pleasure-seeker and author of his own split — not a simple “good side,” and how to write him in extract questions.

UNDERSTANDRETRIEVEREMEMBER
THE MEMORY HOOK
Jekyll is not the angel Hyde ruined. He is the man who wanted the respectability and the roaring devil, and invented a chemical alibi to have both.

The important bits

What you need to know

  1. 1

Start with reputation, not the potion. Jekyll is “the very pink of the proprieties,” a wealthy, charitable doctor whose name opens doors. The experiment is an attempt to keep that name while outsourcing sin.

  2. 2

His own Full Statement is the key document: “man is not truly one, but truly two.” Treat it as a confession with an agenda. He still wants to explain himself as a scientist, not only as a sinner.

  3. 3

Pleasure was already there. “I concealed my pleasures” in youth; Hyde is the unconcealed form. Duality is repression plus appetite, not a random invasion from another planet.

  4. 4

He enjoys the liberty. The Statement admits he could “plod in the public eye with a load of genial respectability, and in a moment… spring headlong into the sea of liberty.” Enjoyment is the uncomfortable fact students skip.

  5. 5

Control is his fantasy: “the moment I choose, I can be rid of Mr Hyde.” The novella punishes that sentence. Addiction, shrinking Hyde-body, and involuntary transformation show science failing as a remote control.

  6. 6

Jekyll is not only private. He writes cheques for Hyde, changes his will, lies to Utterson, and snubs Lanyon. Character is a trail of documents and snubs — the detective plot is his social wreckage.

  7. 7

Setting doubles him: the handsome front of the Jekyll house and the neglected rear door into Hyde’s rooms. Architecture is character. Use the door in any Jekyll paragraph.

  8. 8

By the end he is a prisoner in his cabinet, writing to “bring the life of that unhappy Henry Jekyll to an end.” The respectable name dies because the split could not be maintained. Tragedy is the collapse of the alibi.

Quotations worth analysing

Short evidence. Real method.

Man is not truly one, but truly two.
Henry Jekyll’s Full Statement of the Case

The thesis of the book, spoken by the man who tried to legislate it with a drug. Use it as self-analysis, then challenge it: he talks as if “two” were a discovery, when the novella shows a respectable self that needed the other.

I concealed my pleasures.
Jekyll’s Statement, on his youth

The verb “concealed” makes Victorian reputation the first laboratory. Hyde is not the origin of appetite; secrecy is. This line lets you write about duality before the potion appears.

My devil had been long caged, he came out roaring.
After the Carew murder, in the Statement

Jekyll still says “my devil” — possession language that almost disowns Hyde, even as “caged” admits Jekyll built the prison. The roar is what repression stores. Violence is not a surprise to the text; it is a consequence.

Do not write “Jekyll is good, Hyde is evil”

That binary is the trap Stevenson sets for Utterson’s world and then kicks apart. Jekyll is generous, learned, and addicted to looking respectable; he is also vain about his discovery and willing to let Hyde trample a child if a cheque can settle it. Hyde is smaller because he is only the unrestrained remainder, not a full person with Jekyll’s memory of friendship. When an extract shows Jekyll “at the window” with a look of “abject terror,” you are seeing the moment the alibi fails, not a saint under siege. In essays, use a both/and judgement: Jekyll wants to be good in public and free in private; the potion is a technology of hypocrisy. Duality is social (London’s respectable streets and Soho) as well as psychological. Character analysis that never leaves the laboratory table has missed half the book.

Science, religion, and the Statement’s voice

Jekyll writes like a Victorian professional: case, statement, chemical notes. That form is characterisation. He still believes explanation might redeem him, the way a paper might redeem a doctor’s reputation. Lanyon calls the work “unscientific balderdash” because it crosses a line between medicine and forbidden knowledge — useful context in a clause (Darwinian anxiety, materialist science, religious horror at playing God) if it explains Lanyon’s death and Jekyll’s isolation. Do not dump 1886 as a date with no quotation. The religious lexis — devil, soul, bondage — shows Jekyll cannot stay in the lab coat. He reaches for sermon words when the science runs out. A high-mark paragraph tracks that shift in register inside the Statement: from theory (“truly two”) to roar to the signed ending of a life.

Extract method: start with what Jekyll wants in this passage

AQA-style questions often print Jekyll at the dinner, at the window, or in the Statement. Ask: what does he want the listener to believe? With Utterson he wants delay and privacy (“I am very low”). With Lanyon he wants recognition as a pioneer, then he wants a witness to the transformation. On the page of the Statement he wants a last shaping of his story. Zoom on modal verbs and pronouns: I choose, I concealed, my devil. Then step out to the whole novella: the will, the cheque, Carew, the locked cabinet. Whole-text knowledge should test the extract, not replace it. If the question is duality, Jekyll’s desire to be two names is the through-line; if it is science, the potion and the professional letters; if it is secrecy, the rear door and the refusal to let Utterson in. Always return to a judged sentence: Jekyll is the author of Hyde, not only his victim.

WORKED EXAMPLE

See the idea in action

Extract: Jekyll at the window, terror, then the window shut. Question: how does Stevenson present Jekyll? Opening: Stevenson presents Jekyll as a man whose respectable front can no longer hold; the window is a brief, failed communication before secrecy slams down. Zoom: “abject terror” on a face Utterson thought he knew — reputation cracking in public view. Whole text: this moment looks forward to the cabinet and back to the “moment I choose” fantasy. Compare briefly with Hyde’s trampling calm: Jekyll still has a conscience to terrorise him; that is not goodness, but it is remainder of the social self. Judgement: the window scene shows control ending, not goodness beginning.

Exam technique

Turn knowledge into marks

Call him Henry Jekyll and use the Statement as evidence of voice, not as gospel truth. He is a narrator with a reputation to manage even on the last page.

Common mistakes

Do not give these marks away

  1. 01

Treating Jekyll as purely good until a potion “turns him evil,” as if he had no concealed pleasures.

  2. 02

Retelling the plot of the transformations without a quotation about reputation, will, or the cabinet.

  3. 03

Ignoring form: letters, the will, and the Statement are how Jekyll exists on the page.

QUICK RETRIEVAL

What is the most accurate way to describe Dr Jekyll?

AA purely good scientist attacked by a demon from outside

BA respectable man who tries to separate his public name from appetites he already had, and loses control of the split he created

CUtterson’s brother who never appears

DA policeman investigating Hyde

Show the answer

A respectable man who tries to separate his public name from appetites he already had, and loses control of the split he created. Hyde is produced by Jekyll’s wish to keep reputation and pleasure in different houses. The tragedy is that the houses will not stay separate.

Quick questions

If this is the bit you searched

Is Jekyll a victim?

He suffers, and Stevenson lets us pity the trapped man in the cabinet. He is also the experimenter who signed the will and paid off Hyde’s victims. Write victim and agent in the same paragraph.

How much science do I need?

Enough to say the potion is a material method for a moral idea, and that Victorian readers feared science without limits. You do not need a chemistry equation.

Jekyll or Hyde for a duality question?

Both, in relation. Duality is the relationship. A Jekyll-only essay that never mentions Hyde’s size, violence, or the shared memory will under-score.

What is the will for, in character terms?

It is Jekyll legally making Hyde his heir — reputation planning its own escape route. Utterson’s horror at the will is the respectable world’s first clue.
