Pathogens and disease
Classify pathogens for GCSE Biology: bacteria, viruses, fungi and protists, how they damage cells or release toxins, and the transmission routes that match measles, Salmonella, malaria and rose black spot.
Pathogens cause communicable disease. Name the type first: bacterium (toxins), virus (inside cells), fungus (plants often), protist (malaria). Then name the transmission route and a matching prevention.

A pathogen is a microorganism that causes disease. Communicable (infectious) diseases can be transmitted from one organism to another; non-communicable diseases (cancer, diabetes, heart disease) are not caused by pathogens.

Bacteria are prokaryotic cells. They divide rapidly by binary fission and often damage the host by releasing toxins. Examples: Salmonella (food), gonorrhoea (sexual contact).

Viruses are not cells. They reproduce inside host cells by using the cell’s machinery, then burst out, damaging the cell. Examples: measles (droplets), HIV (sexual contact, blood), TMV in plants.

Fungi cause diseases such as rose black spot: purple-black spots, less photosynthesis, weaker plant. Spread by wind-blown spores. Protists include Plasmodium, which causes malaria and is transmitted by Anopheles mosquito bites.

Transmission routes: airborne droplets, direct contact, sexual contact, contaminated food or water, vectors (mosquito, aphid), unhygienic surfaces. Prevention matches the route: vaccination, condoms, cooking food, sanitation, mosquito nets, destroying spores.

HIV infects white blood cells. AIDS is the late stage when the immune system cannot fight other infections. Antiviral drugs can slow HIV but do not cure it.

Plant pathogens reduce chlorophyll or block vessels, so less photosynthesis and less growth. TMV is viral; rose black spot is fungal. Farmers use resistant varieties, pesticides, or destroy infected plants.

Antibiotics treat bacterial disease, not viral. That distinction belongs with this classification: viruses have no cell wall to target.

This is why antibiotics fail and why viruses need the host’s cells. Do not call a virus a bacterium.

Name protist, vector, and a prevention (nets, draining standing water, antimalarial drugs). “A bug” scores nothing.

How do I structure a disease question so every mark lands?
Four lines: type of pathogen, how it harms, how it spreads, how to prevent or treat. Measles: virus, lives in cells, droplet infection, vaccination (MMR). Salmonella: bacterium, toxins, undercooked chicken or unhygienic kitchens, cook food thoroughly and vaccinate poultry. Gonorrhoea: bacterium, sexual contact, barrier contraception and antibiotics (resistance is rising). Malaria: protist, destroys red blood cells and causes fever, mosquito vector, nets and remove standing water. Rose black spot: fungus, spots reduce photosynthesis, spores on wind, remove infected leaves and use fungicide. If you skip the type, the treatment line often goes wrong (antibiotics for measles). If you skip the route, the prevention is a vague “hygiene” that earns little.

What is the difference between a vector and a pathogen?
The pathogen causes the disease. The vector carries it. Plasmodium is the pathogen; the mosquito is the vector. Aphids can vector plant viruses. Dirty water is a vehicle, not a living vector. In the exam, “malaria is caused by mosquitoes” loses the protist mark. Write “caused by a protist spread by mosquito bites”. Control can target either: drugs against Plasmodium, or nets and insecticides against the mosquito. That two-target idea is a strong evaluate point. HIV is not spread by mosquitoes in the GCSE story; it is body fluids. Mixing HIV and malaria transmission is a common confusion because both can involve blood — still name the correct route.

How do plant-disease answers differ from human ones?
Damage is often about photosynthesis: less chlorophyll, spotted leaves, stunted growth, less yield. Identification uses symptoms, distribution of spots, or testing kits (Triple may mention monoclonal antibodies). Control: destroy infected plants, resistant strains, pesticides, crop rotation. There is no antibody vaccination of a wheat field in the human sense. TMV survives in soil and on tools, so disinfection matters. Rose black spot spores overwinter on fallen leaves, so garden hygiene is biology, not fussiness. Link back to uses of glucose: less photosynthesis means less starch, cellulose and fruit. That sentence lifts a plant-pathogen answer from a description of spots to a whole-plant consequence.

Salmonella is bacterial: toxins from bacteria in undercooked food cause diarrhoea. Prevention is cooking food thoroughly and washing hands. Antibiotics are not used routinely for mild Salmonella because of resistance risk. A student who treats measles with antibiotics has classified the pathogen wrong.
